The Scorch Trials by James Dashner – Book Review

The Scorch trials

In the second book in The Maze Runner trilogy we returned to where we left off in the previous book. Thomas thinks the trials are over after being rescued from the Glade. He’s right, but not for long. Soon, after being told by ‘Rat Man’ that they are all infected with the dreadful disease called the Flare, they are taken to the middle of Scorch, a barren and desolate landscape. Here they must journey to a ‘safe haven’ where they will find a cure for the terrible disease. Who can they trust? Will they ever be free of the Flare?

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green – Book Review

The fault in our stars

Hazel Grace Lancaster, 16, has lived with cancer for three years. She constantly feels as if she is missing out on her life, and hanging out with friends is somewhat of a rarity. In an effort to make Hazel make friends, her mother sends Hazel to a support group, held in a church basement and referred to the ‘literal heart of Jesus’. After reluctantly attending the second meeting, she meets Augustus Waters, the love of her life. In an exchange for reading one of his books, she lends him An Imperial Affliction, a book that she relates to very often. When given the opportunity to travel to Amsterdam to meet the author, she jumps at the chance. Will the author be all that he seems? Will it be a fairy-tale ending for the pair?

This book is very sad, because both of the main protagonists are witty and funny at times. Obviously this is a romance novel, so if you like a bit more action, then you might want to go for something else. Nevertheless, I liked the book even though it was not one that I would usually pick up. This book is very thoughtful and has a lot of meaning. The ending is unusual, and it makes you think. The book showed what it was really like for a teenager to be living with cancer.

Overall, I thought that I would definitely recommend this book to a friend, although all of my friends have read it!

Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins – Book Review

catching fire

Katniss and Peeta are taking a well-earned break. After all, they have brought home a victory for District 12. Soon, Katniss considers the possibility of District 13, and thinks that the district is not completely destroyed, and there is more behind it. With Katniss and Peeta the face of the rebellion, they have to pull out the stops to make the rest of Panem fall for their ‘star-crossed lovers’ act in their victory tour. However, seventy-fifth Hunger Games can mean only one thing: the Quarter Quell is back. Everything changes when Katniss is told that she will have to fight again. Will Katniss pull through and prove that she has what it takes to rise above the rest?

Catching fire has not failed to disappoint. I was doubtful about it at first because I thought Katniss’s days of Hunger Games were over, but the story has been cleverly arranged so there is not one dull moment. This one isn’t as gory as its predecessor, because of the nature of the games. I also loved the twist at the end which makes you want to read the third book, which I shall definitely be buying and reviewing. The ending is clever as it has been left open for anything to happen in Mockingjay. All in all, I think that Catching fire should be read without hesitation after The Hunger Games!

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins – Book Review

hunger games

The Hunger Games tells the story of sixteen year-old protagonist Katniss Everdeen. The story is set in the futuristic Panem, a land which has risen from the destroyed North America. There are 12 districts, the 13th of which had been destroyed after a rebellion against the capitol by the districts. As a harsh reminder not to step out of line, the districts have to present two tributes, a boy and a girl, aged between the ages of 12 and 18, to compete in the Hunger Games. The Hunger Games are a gory fight to the death, so only one tribute can survive. Will it be Katniss? Will the odds be in her favour?
