After winning the competition to be crowned the King’s Champion, assassin Celaena Sardothien is tasked with the dispatching of anyone who dares to challenge the King of Adarlan’s rule. As she has already suffered at the hands of this ruthless king, she offers all of her targets the opportunity to flee, to never be seen again. However, with every death she fakes, she puts the lives of the people that matter the most to her at risk – Dorian, Chaol and Nehemia. As she learns more about the King’s court and it’s secrets, she must decide which side she is on and how much she is willing to sacrifice…
After reading the first in the series, Throne of Glass, I was hesitant to try Crown of Midnight because I found ToG hard to commit to. This instalment was very much the opposite – I found myself racing through this book in two days (very fast for me!).
Throughout the book, different aspects of the characters are explored – seeing how Celaena deals with different situations allowed me, as a reader, to learn more about her character. As she meets each challenge she faces, the skills she gained through her assassin training shine through. This was exciting for me to read and made me want to read on to see how Celaena further develops.
There was only one issue that I found with the book – the love triangle between three of the protagonists. This slightly distracted from the main storyline, and sometimes became frustrating.
That being said, this book is so much better than its predecessor. If you weren’t sure whether to carry on with the series after reading the first, I would recommend giving Crown of Midnight a try. Would you recommend reading the third instalment, Heir of Fire? Let me know in the comments.
It’s great to be back on the blogging scene after a stressful exam season, and I look forward to posting more frequently and engaging more with the blogging community. I’m also posting daily on Instagram, which can be found in the sidebar on the right.
I’m currently reading Running Girl by Simon Manson, so I’ll be reviewing that soon!
